Who Are We?AGM was officially established in November 1999 – in the cooperation with the Philharmonic Association of Faro (AFF) – with the formal denomination "Associação Jazz na Filarmónica", with the intention as its primal objective, to maintain the Big Band of Jazz. Without any formal foundation and voted to oblivion, in March 2000 and after 5 arduous years of solitary work, the dissolution of this orchestra was inevitable. Because of the candidature presented in 2000 in the Ministry of Culture (MC) through contests of The Art Institute (IA) we were attributed that year with one financial donation of around 90.000 euros for the realization in the period of two years, of what was a program called "Algarve in Jazz 2001/2002", which was consisted of the organisation of concerts and "workshops" under strict criteria – processed in several stages – to be realised for the whole Algarve. This ambitious program met the response also from the Town Hall of Tavira with whom we have been cooperating now for four years. Now the annual workshops "Tavira in Jazz", with around 90 students and seven North-American teachers, are a reality with repercussion on the level of the whole Iberian peninsula. Simultaneously, AGM has also managed to realize a workshop "Jazz in the Winter" in cooperation with the Philharmonic Association of Faro and the Municipality of this city. From 2003, through the renovation of the "Protocols of the sustained foundation" with The Art Institute and the Ministry of Culture, AGM maintains a regular program of workshops/formations and active student/teacher bands meant to dinamize the Algarvian musical panorama. Presentations of as many groups of students in the job market through more diverse contests which are aimed to a wide exposure of the future professionals to the market demands, organization of musical events, recordings, etc. Through the partnership with the Theatre Company of Algarve (ACTA) AGM has developed an intense creative and well formed activity with the Cineclub of Faro with the project "Os garotos de Charlot". In the field of discographic edition AGM has already produced certain projects on its own and more recently, in partnership with the label Trem Azul / Clean Feed. The CDs "A Jazzar no Zeca" and "Will Holshouser Trio Live", which was recorded in December 2004 in the Theater Lethes in Faro. |
